Why a giveaway?

Simple, we want to give away tokens of appreciation for the wonderful support we've been receiving from our customers, fans and blog readers, for the past few years.

Twelve prizes, really?

As most of you already know, I am a big fan of all things DIY. So, when I started the new hobby, I knew instantly, they should be something handmade-with-lotsa-love, and as many prizes as the budget allows. I really did enjoy making them, so there will be not only one winner, but twelve! Yes, we are giving away twelve prizes.

Why twelve? Won't the giveaway be less 'special'?

Definitely the opposite. Where we are today is because of you, the customers, fans & loyal readers. So, if we can give more, why not give more? That, and just because I had fun working with the colourful yarns I could not stop at one, or two, or three...

The second package of folded cards is Silver 750. Priced at RM750, below are the details of this package.

This is a folded card with close size of 110mm x 180mm, open size of 180mm x 220mm.
The basic price is RM750.00. Full upgrades of 1000 pieces cards, 2000 pieces tags and 2 buntings, will only cost you RM1100, which come with ten laminated A3-size, direction signage for free.
It includes artwork design & plain envelopes which you could choose either cream or pink in colour.
It is full-colour print on both sides of the card. So, you could have two invitations & two maps on each card.
The size of thank you tags is at the maximum of 90mm x 54mm and 40mm x 40mm at minimum. You may choose any size within that range. Yes, we have round tags and other types & sizes but they are not offered in this package.
The additional 500 pieces are of the same design only. The same term applies to thank you tags.
I will create designs for the tags & bunting, similar to your invitation cards unless requested otherwise.

Silver 650 or S650 is one of our two new packages of folded cards. We will do a different entry on the other package later. What's in this package of RM650?

What is 'Green Printing'?

We are happy to announce that out main printing supplier has introduced "an integrated system of processes covering environmental management, quality control, and health and safety procedures to promote a healthy and safe environment for both the community and stakeholders while producing high quality printing products". In production, this means printing using mainly soy inks, and running their presses alcohol free.

What is soy ink?
Soy ink is a kind of ink made from soybeans. As opposed to traditional petroleum-based ink, soy-based ink is more environmentally friendly, might provide more accurate colors, and makes it easier to recycle paper.

Why soy ink plays an important role in green printing?
Soy ink may be the solution to the environmental health and safety concerns of the printing industry. A new study confirms that soy ink can help to reduce the environmental burden of the printing industry. Soybean oil comes from a renewable source: soybeans. Soybean agriculture uses only 0.5 percent of the total energy needed to produce soy ink.

Soy ink is naturally low in vocs (volatile organic compounds, chemical compounds that evaporate and react to sunlight) and its usage can reduce emissions causing air pollution.

Soy inks show a greater rub resistance and vibrant colors. Soybean oil’s clarity allows pigments to reach their full potential, resulting in deep, rich bright colors. Soy ink delivers a high quality print compare to traditional petroleum-based ink.

Soy ink maintains its lithographic stability throughout the entire print job, so the press operator makes fewer adjustments during production and rejects fewer copies because of inferior quality.

What is alcohol free printing?
The whole printing process operate without the use of alcohol or isopropanol (ipa).

Why alcohol free printing plays an important role in green printing?
Alcohol free printing helps protect the environment. This is because alcohol and washing agents are volatile and evaporate quickly. Under the influence of the sun, the emissions in the form of low-level ozone cause so-called summer smog.

Alcohol free printing will reduce the frequent exposure to alcohol which is linked to serious health and safety issues.

Alcohol free printing, however, offers benefits that circumvent the disadvantages of alcohol based printing plus help operation. Alcohol free printing offers lower ink and water settings along with the ability to print a given density using an ink film that is not diluted by alcohol. The result is better quality printing with sharper dots and less tendency for emulsification.

I haven't had the time to write an entire entry for a while. We've been pretty much occupied with more bookings since the last Ekspo Kahwin. Alhamdulillah, and, from the bottom of my heart, thank you so much for those who came and supported us. We are so ready for the next one, bring it on!

Ok, let's move on to this invitation.

Niena's request for me was to do a combination of fall theme with a traditional pattern such as songket or batik. Good news, she had already drafted her idea. Niena wanted a part of the card to be decorated with falling leaves which carefully transformed into songket patterns. The tricky part was to find 'cheerful-looking' autumn leaves and the more difficult task is to create a matching songket motif.

Instead of having two invitations in one card, Sunny and Najihah opted for two different set, each 'for him' and 'for her' invitation. They had identical concept but not the colour palette. So I made only one layout for both designs but with different background effects, polka dots for Najihah & stripes for her Sunny. The outcome, a girly & soft look for the bride's invitation card and a masculine & bold look for the groom's.

We've reached the third week of Ramadhan, which means we're less than two weeks away from our Hari Raya. At last, I have time to spare, to update my berhabuk blog before the Aidil Fitri break.

Often, I start the design process with the main item on the order list, which is the wedding invitation card. However, for Hani's order, it began with her thank you stickers. Personally, peach is one of the more difficult colour to work with. I used to struggle with it. Too much of it, the whole design will look as if it is shouting at you. Too little, it gives a pale-ish look.

However, I learned, the trick is actually very simple. It's in the tone and getting the right combination. Once you've got everything perfectly paired, it's all peachy!

Ekspo Kahwin KL 2011 Edisi 3

It's been a while, a long while, since my last entry. Gonna make a quick update today. We had so much fun throughout the three-day expo. Learned a lot too. Although there were a minor hiccup but the helpful organizer was quick to solve it. Here are some of the going-ons during the Ekspo Kahwin KL 2011 Edisi 3, held in Wangsa Walk Mall from 1st to 3rd July 2011.

Booth set-up.

Setting up started in the wee hour of 1st July. We were supposed to begin work at 4a.m. We were too tired from not having enough sleep days before, so we left the house around 5.30a.m. arriving only one and a half later. Believe it or not, I missed a junction on the way over to Wangsa Walk Mall and drove all to way to KL city centre before realizing I was lost. Blame it on the fatigue.

The expo was our first exposure to meet the customers, off-line. We had a slow start but the the pace started picking up on the second day. And by the end of the third & last day, we were so exhausted and almost drained out.

Salam and good morning to everyone!

How was your weekend?

Ours was a blast! The expo was a success and the response exceeded our expectation. We even had fans coming to Wangsa Walk Mall, from outside of Selangor, just to meet us.

We owe our heartiest thanks to everyone who dropped by our booth during the expo. Everyone were so nice to us & very supportive. Being a newcomer in this industry, we are humbled by this experience.

This is our last update before the wedding expo. I had known that the preparation could be a gigantic task for a tiny business entity like ours. But it is fun too! Especially the design-our-booth part and oh! the shoppings.

Surya & Izs asked for a combination of this and this. I went for a simple look and came up with this set.

Their thank you tag had special touch. Sue ordered a few handmade stamps from Mango of kulitmaggis.com, who's also a Facebook friend of mine. Oh, what an artist she is! And I admire her handiwork so much! After acquiring the permission to use the original artwork from Mango, the owner of kulitmanggis.com, I continued working on the tag.

Once upon a time in land not so far away...

She sent a friend request and I accepted. That was quite some time ago. I knew she was a graphic designer who's also offering wedding card printing services, but I didn't mind because I regarded her a fellow businesswomen & designer. A few days ago, to my surprise I saw an artwork which is similar to one of my buntings, posted on her wall. Then I found out, there are three more.

I was frustrated, dissatisfied and let it all out on my personal wall.

But, in order to clear the air, I left messages on her photo walls to inform her about the similarity and also the link to my blog. She responded a few minutes later. A typical respond which was expected earlier (refer to the above)

I left the same remark on each artwork. Note the 'copyright' claim, one for each artwork.

A few minutes later, I could no longer view the artworks and also her entire Facebook profile. I was removed as a friend. But unfortunately it did not end there...

As the saying goes, walls have ears. A few amusing questions raised when I was given an opportunity to view her wall comments later.

1) All my earlier comments on the buntings similarity were removed, together with her "kebetulan" & "tak mungkin meniru" comments.

2) Did she make a 180deg turn from saying it was all 'kebetulan' and "tak mungkin meniru" to admitting copying my work? She justifiied her act by claiming that copying is an art form, but what she did was not just copying, it's close imitation of the original.

3) I do understand that we are 'inspired by' or to create new ideas from observations and research. Being creative & innovative is something, but making an exact copy and then claiming a copyright, that is something else. And if that was what her lecturer taught her, I am appalled.

4) The industry of wedding invitation card is evolving. The designs are more personal & revolutionized. Our b2b's and g2b's are now more creative with all sorts of ideas for their special cards of the special day. Customers are wiser and more aware of getting the best money can buy. Those with limited budget should not be left behind. That is what artchetak all about. We are trying to give new and fresh ideas which are affordable to everyone.

5) How does she expect me to "bising" on her wall if I was no longer her facebook friend. YOU REMOVED ME, REMEMBER?

What is she babbling about? Of course lah you did the editing yourself. But there's difference between coming up with a totally new artwork which is inspired by another artwork; and making ("editing") an exact copy.

Eh! I thought you said it was all your ideas, why did your friend said it was your customer's? So, which is it?

Ok, last but not least, this is exactly what I mean, "inspired by an idea/concept" versus "copycat" (or some say "good editing"). I spent less than 15 minutes for "good editing" artwork. But it took me 4 days and several emails with customer to get the final artwork of "inspired by original".

Even I couldn't propose something with the likes of the "good editing" artwork to customer, tak sanggup beb!

This seemingly simple design was one of the most difficult to come up with. My task was to create an invitation card of a sporty theme, that is both simple & classic. Not sure if 'sporty', 'simple' and 'classic' could go together nor was I given any samples or draft to start my work with, I had to do a bit of research on my own. Yes, by research, I mean, 'googling', and I came across this website, www.sportsthemedweddings.com.

Unfortunately, I left the website uninspired. After a while, I found myself browsing through all sorts of sports equipments and peripherals. Eventually, after days of fruitless research I decided to move forward by choosing the 1986 World Cup ball. Below are the full final set of wedding invitation, thank you tags & bunting.

Note to readers : I am so deep in my works so this is suppose to be a very short entry but apparently it is not, because this is so awesome!

Note to self : Do not make this a practice, you've got almost-endless deadlines. But this is so fantastically awesome!

It's a habit to have a stash of paper plates in my home, new or recycled ones. My husband and I often take our girls out for quick picnic so I could just grab some whenever we go out. Besides that, paper plates are a great tool to keep my girls busy, so they don't bother their busy mom.

Kids drawing on paper plates, are pretty common, aren't they? But what about, Paper-Plate Polyhedron? See below.

There are times when I just could not squeeze enough creative juice out of me, customers' feedbacks and ideas are a great help. Maria's original photos are wonderful, it's quite difficult to come up with artworks without 'destroying' them. So I took a safe path, with minimum elements, focusing on text and fonts only. As a result, the banner and buntings looked somewhat 'empty'. Maria was not really elated about them and e-mailed me samples or her wedding cards, to inspire me. That helped, a lot. After a few more minor edits later, we came up with these.

Normally, upon accepting an order, I will ask for some sample photos/images to visually explain what the customer wants. These samples will help me to understand the directions of your theme/concept. If no samples are available, I will do a quick research on the theme/concept. I heavily advise all my customers to be extra clear on your request prior to the initial design process. Please provide as much input as possible during the discussion, which will be followed by an initial draft. However, if a customer decides to have a totally new artwork, an extra RM50.00 is levied.

I will then, continue working on the artwork until the customers give their final approval to go into print.

Don't worry, it's not as complicated as you think.

What or who inspired the look of your wedding card? Nadia wanted a background of damask wallpaper with a chandelier. And knowing that her mother is a big fan of Vantage Porcelainwares, Nadia also asked for a Vantage-inspired flower as well. I was hesitant at first, having too many elements to work with. My first & foremost worry was, the card would look overcrowded, with all the different items put together on one page. But, who could turn down such thoughtful request?

Essential 450 Package

The response is so much better than I had anticipated, e-mails, Facebook messages are pouring in. Thank you so much for your kind interest. But I think I should explain further, what does this package offer, here in my blog.

The basic price is RM450.00. Full upgrades will only cost you RM650.
It includes artwork design & plain envelopes which you could choose either cream or pink in colour.
The invitation is a one-piece, non-folded card.
It is full-colour print on both sides of the card. So, you could have two invitations & two maps on each card.
The size of thank you tags is at the maximum of 90mm x 54mm and 40mm x 40mm at minimum. You may choose any size within that range. Yes, we have round tags and other types & sizes but they are not offered in this package.
The additional 500 pieces are of the same design only. The same term applies to thank you tags.
I will create designs for the tags & bunting, similar to your invitation cards.
There's no deadlines, yet.

Introducing our second package, the Essential 500. The price? RM500. The quantity & material are like those in Essential 450 package but with the exception of the invitation card which has a bigger size, 180mm x 110mm. It also offers the same upgrades & freebies.

If you wish, you could add another 500 pieces of the same design with an extra charge of just RM200. Additional 1000 pieces of tags will cost you only RM50. And for those who order the full upgrade of RM250, will get five, laminated A3-size direction signages.

Package 1 : Essential 450

To welcome the year 2011, I decided to upgrade the RM450 package and now it's named the Essential450. The price is RM450 still but, instead of 260gsm artcard, we are now offering 230gsm ivory white card. The differences? Ivory white card has a smoother paper-like surface & it is the whitest card material. Personally it's one of my favourite paper. Ivory white cards are not as expensive as fine linen or fine vein or other textured paper, but they are clean and solid, and they also project a more professional image than the normal artcard.

If the 500 pieces invitation cards are not enough, you could add another 500 pieces of the same design with an extra charge of just RM150. Additional 1000 pieces of tags will cost you only RM50. And for those who order the full upgrade of RM200, will get five, laminated A3-size direction signages.

Another note, there's no deadlines. It will be available as long as there's a demand.

Seri & I communicated via emails. I met most of my customers only once, when they came to pick up their orders. Many managed to convey their ideas clearly through writings. Just like Laila, Seri wanted the doily but not the extra cost. So again, I used the digital image of a doily paper.

The ideal term to order your personalized wedding card is two months prior the expected time of delivery. It gives me ample time to sketch you a draft. Latest is a month before the deadline. Occasionally, we do accept last minutes or urgent orders, on one condition, that you have to choose a design from our previous works. However, we will make some minor editing, so, not one card will look exactly the same.

Such is the case of Diyana's invitation card. When she contacted me, Diyana had less than a month prior her wedding. She had already chosen her favourite design so I started editing immediately. Take a look at the original design here. The new layout had a different look but the colour scheme remained unchanged. It matched Diyana's own wedding theme.

This is going to be a very lengthy post. But I appeal to you, my dear friends, to continue reading this entry until its' last word.

I am a mother of two girls. My first daughter was born in 2006 and she is now a very chatty almost-5-year-old. And my younger daughter is a perky almost-3-year-old. No matter what happens during the day, watching them sleeping at night is the highlight of my daily routine. They are handful and I love them to bits. One of my greatest fear is someone might hurt them & no one would help.

Why am I sharing these with you?

UNICEF, recently, launches Get on Board campaign to unite 100,000 supporters to stop child abuse in Malaysia.

What is CHILD ABUSE?

Child abuse (and neglect known formally by United Nations agencies as child maltreatment) is harm (or risk of harm) caused to a child by a parent, guardian or another person in a position of responsibility, trust or power over the child.

There are four major types of child abuse:

Neglect: failure to provide for a child’s basic needs.
Physical abuse: punching, beating, kicking, biting, burning, shaking, stabbing, choking, or otherwise harming a child.
Sexual abuse: fondling a child’s genitals, penetration, incest, rape, sodomy, indecent exposure, and commercial exploitation through prostitution or the production of pornographic materials.
Emotional abuse: constant criticism, threats, rejection as well as withholding love, support, or guidance.

Child abuse affects children’s health, development and strips away their dignity. In most cases, long-term emotional scars are left behind.

Children and young people with special needs, including children with disabilities and those living with HIV and AIDS are particularly vulnerable to abuse. Undocumented children, migrant and refugee children are also at risk.

Do you now that, based on statistics from the Department of Social Welfare, Malaysia :

Child abuse is on the rise in Malaysia with an increase of some 700 reported cases between 2006 and 2008.
Average of 7 children in Malaysia were reported to be victims of child abuse each day in 2008.
1 in 2 child victims reported in 2008 were abused by a parent.

Based on 2008 reported figures, neglect is the most common form of child abuse in Malaysia. The breakdown of the three key forms of abuse are as follows:

952 child victims experienced neglect, meaning a caretaker failed to provide for the child’s basic needs.
863 child victims were physically abused.
733 child victims were sexually abused, 72% were incest.
58 child victims were abandoned babies.
Failure to provide care and supervision has become the most frequent cause of death among children.

The more alarming issue is most child abuse goes unreported and the statistical snapshot could be just the “tip of the iceberg”.

CHILD ABUSE: Myths and Facts

MYTH 1:

It’s only abuse if there is physical violence.

FACT:

Physical abuse is just one form of abuse. Children can also be harmed by emotional abuse, sexual abuse and neglect. These types of abuse are usually hidden from sight and, as a result, people are less likely to take action and help the children.

MYTH 2:

Only bad people abuse. Good people don’t.

FACT:

Not all abusers are bad and want to harm their children intentionally. Some abusers may have been victims of abuse themselves, and grew up not knowing any other way of parenting or treating children. Others may be struggling with mental health problems, alcohol and drug addiction and other personal problems.

MYTH 3:

Many children do not know their abusers.

FACT:

Although some children are abused by complete strangers, many actually know their abusers and trust them. Abusers are most commonly family members, or someone who is close to the family and the child.

MYTH 4:

Child abuse doesn’t happen in “good” families and wealthy households.

FACT:

Child abuse can happen in any household, regardless of ethnic background, culture, religion or economic status. Sometimes, a family that seems to have it all can hide a different story behind closed doors.

MYTH 5:

Many adults who suffered abuse in childhood are not affected by this abuse in adult life.

FACT:

Although some adults manage to cope with abuse they suffered as children, many remain deeply affected in adult life. It is not easy to just get over child abuse. Survivors of child abuse need care and support to overcome the trauma of abuse and live full healthy lives.

MYTH 6:

Abused children will definitely grow up to be abusers.

FACT:

Some survivors of child abuse may unconsciously repeat the violent or abusive treatment that they experienced as a child. However, many have a strong motivation to protect their own children from experiencing what they had suffered and, instead, become wonderful parents.

MYTH 7:

A child is responsible for the abuse that he/she suffers.

FACT:

A child is never responsible for the abuse he/she suffers. The responsibility for abuse lies solely with the offender. In the case of sexual abuse, offenders often try to shift the blame for their actions by accusing the child of being promiscuous or seductive, especially if it involves a teenager.

MYTH 8:

Children lie about being sexually abused.

FACT:

It is extremely rare for children to lie about being sexually abused. In reality, children may not want to disclose sexual abuse because they are embarrassed, afraid or uncomfortable.

CHILD ABUSE : What can you do if a child confides in you?

The Do’s

If a child approaches you to confide in you, remain calm and listen.
Believe the child. Talk to the child in a non-leading, non-threatening way.
Reassure the child that it is not his or her fault.
Look out for signs or symptoms of abuse.
Let the child know that telling you about what happened was the right thing to do.
Reassure the child of your help and support.

The Don’ts

Do not demonstrate feelings of shock.
Do not react negatively to what the child has to say.
Do not confront the abuser.

Seek help by calling 15999.

Alternatively, report to the nearest police station or contact the Social Welfare Department directly. If you believe that the child needs medical assistance, take the child immediately to the ‘Accident and Emergency’ (A&E) Unit of the General Hospital or the nearest hospital in your locality.

IT’S OUR BUSINESS

Child abuse is not someone else’s problem. It is OUR problem. You can do your part to help and make a difference: By learning more about abuse. By talking about it and raising awareness. By asking questions and staying alert. By minimising opportunities for abuse. By getting involved and reporting abuse or any suspicion of abuse.

DOING THE RIGHT THING!

Children need love and support if they are to grow and develop to their full potential. They need protection from abuse which can distort and destroy their lives.

The digitally-driven campaign, a first by UNICEF in the region, aims to unite 100,000 supporters to raise their hand in support of children. Wedding Movie Bunting

Ell, who ordered the chandeliers-inspired wedding card, wanted a bunting similar to a wedding movie poster which she found at weddingmovieposter.com.

Their pre-wed photo album has so many beautiful shots. So I decided to combine at least two of them. "The Infinite Love Story of Mr. & Mrs.Fariz" is the title of her wedding blog. And no movie poster is complete without the credits, usually placed at the very bottom on a movie poster.

This entry has got nothing to do with any yellow bikini.

But it's everything about polka dots. Saiful Amri & Ili Farhana tied the knot a month ago. They are in the midst of preparing for the 'Sambut Menantu', which will take place in the middle December.

The bride loved polka dots and the groom lovingly obliged.

The groom wanted a clean & simple design and the bride happily agreed.

I didn't expect the actual cards would look very 'sweet & tasty'. They somehow remind me of kuih lapis, a local delicacy.

I love tulip

The tulip, originally grew wild in Persia, was first cultivated in Turki as early as 1000AD. According to the Persian legend, a boy named Farhad, fell in love with a beautiful girl, Shirin. Sadly one day, he heard that she had been killed. His life shattered to pieces and he was crushed by sorrow. He then mounted his favorite horse and galloped over a cliff to his death. And a tulip grew from each drop of his blood that trickled onto the ground, a symbol of his perfect love. Due to this, the red tulip became a symbol of passionate love in ancient Persia.

It was so often found in Persian poetry, songs and paintings that the tulips were considered the symbol of Ottoman Empire. The tulip was introduced in Western Europe & the Netherlands in 17th century and Holland has been the main breeder and supplier of hundreds of tulip species for hundreds of years.

Tulip is my favourite flower. To me, it personifies a lady of graceful charm and humble beauty. I'd gladly accept any opportunity to work on tulips inspired design.

Bonna's choice of colours & element are quite a challenge to me. Two strikingly different theme colours, and a filigree shape, to be incorporated into one concept. I decided to throw in elements of tiles together and here are the final artworks. Blue tiles on pink background for the bride & pink tiles on blue background for her groom.
